Rochelle L. regarding "The Shivaree," chapter 10 of Fierce Like an Oak Tree:

"So this story. You make it come alive. I think readers who didn’t  know these people can easily conjure up these bright vibrant images you have created. I love this one.

You write in such a way that it just pulls you in gently then there’s this profound depth that hits you. Like when you wrote about ingesting the memories. Wow. I had to read that three times…slowly. And think about my own memories. Hmmmm.

It felt like I was going down a stream floating between one story to another with this connection between them all.

But man, Rae. I could see the bean with Raym and OTom working on it. I could feel the Louisiana humidity and breeze. I could feel the laughter and fun. And the deep ache for the people that are no longer here and a way of life that no longer exists.

This might yet be one of my favorites."
